Read on to learn\nwhy dental care is so important for your son or daughter and why you should\ntake advantage of the extra time to keep their smile happy and healthy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Are Regular Checkups Important for Kids?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Dental Association recommends that every child\nvisit a dentist by age 1, or as soon as the first tooth appears. This visit can\nteach parents how to care for their little one\u2019s teeth and what to expect in\nterms of when other teeth will grow in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regular checkups are also the best way to learn how to\nprevent cavities and decay. The Centers for Disease Control reports that more\nthan 40 percent of children have decay by the time they reach kindergarten.\nDecay or infection on a baby tooth can cause dark spots on the adult tooth\ndeveloping beneath it. By taking your child in for a checkup every six months,\nyou ensure that these problems can be caught sooner rather than later. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Should I Schedule My Child\u2019s Appointment Over Summer Break? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The main reason to schedule your kid\u2019s appointment this\nsummer is that they won\u2019t have to miss school. If you schedule another\nappointment six months later, it will likely land during their winter break,\nmeaning even less missed school time! Your son or daughter won\u2019t have to sacrifice\na moment of education for their smile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can I Teach Healthy Dental Habits at Home? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some things you can do to instill good dental\nhygiene in your children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Supervise\nyoung kids. <\/strong>If your child is 6 or younger, it\u2019s a good idea to help them\nbrush their teeth until they are comfortable doing it on their own and they can\nreach all areas of their mouth. In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics\nsuggests only putting a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on a child\u2019s toothbrush\nuntil they are at least six years old and can spit on their own.<\/li><li><strong>Work on\none thing at a time. <\/strong>Once your child is comfortable with brushing on their\nown, start teaching them to floss. You can start with floss picks to help them\nreach the back teeth. Trying to teach brushing and flossing at the same time\nwill likely result in neither of those things getting learned!<\/li><li><strong>Give them\na choice of healthy snacks.<\/strong> Offer your son or daughter their pick of a\nhealthy snack, such as cheese or a piece of fruit. When you let them be part of\nthe decision process, they are more likely to be satisfied with their snack and\nmake that choice on their own in the future.<\/li><li><strong>Be a\npositive role model. <\/strong>If you set the example of brushing your teeth twice a\nday and flossing once a day, your little one will follow your lead. <\/li><li><strong>Schedule\nregular appointments with your family dentist.<\/strong> Visits every six months can\ndetermine how well your habits are working. Your dentist can also examine your\nchild\u2019s teeth for cavities and decay and treat them if need be. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Summer is a great time for your kid to make their\nsemi-annual trip to the dentist, and any time is great to start learning good\ndental habits!
